ZHANG HANQI

Hanqi Zhang (Oscar) was born in October 2010 in Nanjing, China, and moved to Calgary, Canada, when he was 11 years old. Oscar developed an interest in piano, drum set, and painting at the young age of 5. When he was 9 years old, he began his formal piano training due to his personal love for it. He studied with Dr. Zhengbo Shi and the young pianist Lin Ye, who was a student of Vladimir Krainev. He studied with Polish piano professor Krzysztof Jablonski from 2022 until now. He is a high scholarship student in the Mount Royal University Conservatory for Advanced Performance Program in Akiko Tominaga’s group.

Throughout his musical journey, he has earned awards in various competitions.

– Third place in the Professional Category 3 at the Chopin Youth International Competition, China 2025.
– Award at the 18th Ettlingen International Competition in Germany, 2022.
– Runners-up in the 2021 China Grand International Piano Festival & Lang Lang Piano Competition.
– First prize in the Children’s Group category at the Germany Hannover Piano Classic Competition 2021.
– Winner of the 2021 Youth Chopin Competition China Final.
– Awarded a high scholarship to participate in the Art of the Piano Festival in San Francisco in 2024.
– Awarded a scholarship to participate in the Vivace Music Festival in 2024.
– Awarded a scholarship to attend the Berkshire Piano Festival in 2024.
– Participant in the Cleveland International Piano Institute in 2023.

In his pursuit of musical excellence, he has also attended numerous masterclasses and received guidance from renowned pianists such as Gerrit Zitterbart, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Kevin Kern, Boris Slutsky, and many others.

Apart from his piano practice dedication, Oscar enjoys chess, reading, and mathematics, and has a strong passion for playing soccer.
